Research

About

The Research Branch is a recent addition to the team with the first cohort being hired in 2024. Across the three Research sub teams, Enhancement, Simulation and Prototyping, QADT outputs cutting edge research that pushes the pre conceptions of undergraduate research.

Past Work

Multi Drone Swarm Simulation (ICUAS 2026)

The ICUAS 2026 competition tasked the team to develop a drone swarm simulation for threat detection applications. The simulation team created several ROS2 scripts to control drone movements and implemented Olfati-Saber flocking for coordination between agents. Their work earned them second place in the simulation round.

Compliant Airfoil Mechanisms
(IMAV 2026)

For IMAV 2026, the Enhancement Team researched the efficiency gains through the use of compliant airfoil mechanisms. Using CFD software it was determined that compliant mechanisms offered a higher lift coefficient and also eliminated a source of flow seperation.

Tilt Rotor Hybrid Conversion
(VFS 2026)

For the VFS 2026 competition, the Prototyping Team researched and designed the hybridization of the Bell XV-15 tilt rotor aircraft. They did this in two stages, first the hybridization of the aircraft with the existing systems in place and second the modification and improvement of systems that compliments the propulsion system. Check out the paper below!

DBD Plasma Actuators
(IMAV 2025)

For IMAV 2025, the Enhancement Team researched the use of Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) Plasma Actuators to mitigate airflow seperation. The results indicated that the use of the actuator at the leading edge yields higher lift and lower drag coefficients, proving its effectiveness. The teams work earned them the opportunity to present their work at the conference in Mexico!

Hydrogen Passenger eVTOL
(VFS 2026)

For the VFS 2025 competition, the prototyping designed a hydrogen powered eVTOL for passenger carrying missions at the Wright Brothers museum. The aircraft, Aetheris, is designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency at cruise and features a semi-monocoque design.
